Chaga mushroom is a growth that appears on dry birches or on the trunks of living trees (elm, mountain ash, beech, alder). The mushroom has a strong healing effect. This is perhaps one of the most effective herbal remedies. Old or too large growths are not used for medicinal purposes. Chaga mushroom can be harvested for a whole year. However, it separates very poorly from the tree trunk. This is done with an ax. The growth is cut down at the very base, and then the black medicinal part is separated. The prepared part of the chaga mushroom can be stored from six months to two years in a dry room. The ash contained in chaga is very valuable as it contains oxides of aluminum, zinc, potassium, manganese, magnesium and sodium. Chaga also contains a number of acids: formic, vanillic, oxalic. REFERENCE:
Chaga, or birch mushroom, is a sterile (sterile) form of a fungus belonging to the species Tinder fungus (Latin Inonotus obliquus) of the Basidiomycete division. It is most often found on birches, which is why it received the popular name “black birch mushroom”. Less commonly, it affects some other living trees – alder, mountain ash, beech, elm, maple. It is used in medicine as an antitumor and protivogastritis agent. Biological description: Chaga is formed as a result of infection of a tree with the parasitic fungus Inonotus obliquus. Its spores germinate only if they fall on damaged areas of tree bark. An irregular growth is formed, reaching from 5 to 40 cm in diameter and 10-15 cm thick. The surface of the growth is black, covered with numerous cracks. Inside, the color is dark brown (due to pigmentation of hyphae), closer to wood it turns into reddish-brown. The growth is permeated with white streaks consisting of colorless hyphae. Growth can sometimes last up to 10-20 years, but inevitably leads to the death of the host tree. After the death of the tree, the actual fruiting body of the fungus appears on the opposite side of the trunk. It develops under the bark, and the hyphae extend 0.5-1 m along the length of the trunk. As the spores mature, ridge-like outgrowths are formed – the so-called “persistent plates”. They break through the bark of the tree, exposing the brownish-brown hymenophore. Spores are colorless at first, then become pale reddish in color; thick-walled, with one or more drops of oil inside. After the tree dies off, the actual fruiting body of the fungus appears on the opposite side of the trunk. It develops under the bark, and the hyphae extend 0.5-1 m along the length of the trunk. The shape of the growths depends on the nature of the damage through which the birch becomes infected with the tinder fungus.
